Posted by Scott under: News

Canon U.S.A. today has announced the introduction of the EOS 50D Digital SLR camera.  This new camera features a 15.1-megapixel sensor with an expanded ISO range and enhanced noise reduction.

We’ll have more on this new camera as information becomes available.

This had better be a good one from Canon, at a reasonable price, or else I am headed back to Nikon. My last Nikons were about 10 years ago, but I still have all the lenses ( with a bit of mold growing inside…).

so i just bought my 40D and from the specs given on gizmodo, im not entirely impressed and dont see too much difference. Its nice that theres more megapixels, but i want to know how it handles noise. is it any better than the d300? haha…yeahh…

I just want canon to come out with a super competitor to the d700. i just have a crazy feeling that canon has a crazy secret camera filled with the technology people have been begging for. And i also think they keep secrets much better than nikon does :D

And the G10 over at popphoto - maybe Alex will have more to choose from than he thought (though the LX3 still looks great).

Today seems to be a canon gear-head’s wet-dream.

My current 40D I bought in September of last year may be for sale. My images go big, so the 15 mega-pix sounds good so far. We”ll see…

I could be wrong because I haven’t seen images from this camera but packing that many megapixels onto that size sensor makes me guess that this camera is going to be noisy - especially in low light. I would have rather seen Canon try to match Nikon’s low light performance.

OK…so we have had the 30D, 40D and now the 50D, WHERE IS MY BLOODY 5D MkII???????????

Maybe this is a sign that the 5D MkII will have ISO (low noise) range comparable to/better than the D3. If the 50D lives up to what they are saying (and it had better) I will be excited to hear that canon isn’t resting on its laurels as far as the lower end cameras go, but dangit I need to buy a full frame sensor soon!

@ Scott-

I was thinking of the same thing when I saw the sensor specs of still being a cropped-sensor. I’ll have to wait and see.

Just what I have been waiting for! I am so glad I didn’t buy the 40d this week!

The thing I like is ISO in the viewfinder. I think I’ll wait to see images from the camera before commenting on things like low light performance.

If Canon fails to announce a 5D MKII I’ll have a great resource of Canon Lenses to buy as more photographers jump ship to Nikon.

40D just came out less then a year ago…… I was hopping more of a 5D Mark II with some killer ISO/Noise…

Here is a sample image taken with the Canon EOS 50D taken at ISO6400. Looks like my back up 30D at ISO400, lovely.

I wish this 50D was available for a wedding I recently shot.

@CPS Member I’ll let you post the link but caution folks that there’s no way to verify where this actually came from.

@Scott The metadata on the photo CPS Member link to says:
Canon EOS 50D
I know that there is probably some way of faking the metadata, but I see no reason not to trust it in this case.

@Bob that’s your call. I am merely pointing out that there’s no way to really tell. If you’d like, I can post a picture today that says it comes from the 50D in the metadata too; and I don’t have a D50.

JVL: I find no G10 at the pophoto site. I find a new R10, but it’s not Canon.
