TWIP’s Photo Assignment Competition 12 - Blue

Posted by Scott under: Photo Assignment

Our last photo assignment was Fireworks and we had hundreds of qualified submissions. But there can be only one winner. And the winner is …. 01a_Fireworks, by naytmayer. Talk about impact! Wow this is so well thought out. The winner took the theme seriously and built an amazing story. Hands down it’s one of the best images ever submitted to our assignment competition. If the winner sends us an e-mail, we’ll get busy sending them their prize, which this week is a fresh copy of Adobe Lightroom.

The runner up was selena sparkles by missybrooks. Once again this image contains a person - almost never a bad idea by the way, and the story is strong. Nice light and even though it breaks some compositional rules, it’s still a great photo. Thanks to everyone who entered.

This week’s assignment - should you decide to accept it - is to photograph BLUE. That’s it - no other guidelines - (other than keep it clean - remember our TWIP Flickr Group rules - kid-safe photos only please.)

You can post ONE image to the new Flickr - the TWIP CONTEST POOL and we’ll do the rest. You can also just use the old tag system if you prefer and tag the image with the current theme.

We’ll pick one or two of the images we really like to talk about and feature on the blog - and if we really like something, we’ll send a free book, (or two or three or whatever we have tossed into the prize pool that week) to the winner.

So have at it. You have until July 31 at 5:00 PM - PST to post your images. You can still post images with this theme after the deadline - but we won’t consider them for our TWIP Photo Assignment Competition.

If you’d like to chip in, please suggest some future themes you’d like us to explore in the comment section below. Have fun.

The first photo is amazing but I have to say I wouldn’t have picked the second image over a number of others posted for the competition; but I guess that’s why photography preference is subjective.

@Jason no worries - I get this comment via email about 100 times each week that we announce the winners. No matter what I pick - someone will disagree - but as you say - it’s subjective and lucky for these two that my subjective decision fell their way. :)

I’ve entered one of my own pictures in a dozen contests just to see how it would do. Got everything from Best of Show to nothing and in between.

The winner stopped me right away, too. The look on the little girl’s face is priceless. Good choice!

The winning shot is awesome and hilarious! Really creative, fun and well done. Runner up is excellent also. Congrats to both.

Love the podcast and blog! I’ve learned so much already, and am planning to jump in on the photo contest with Blue this week. There is a lot of stiff competition, though; TWIP listeners are amazingly talented and creative. I’ll try not to limit myself to pictures of my dog. :o)

I’ve been thinking of a few other concepts that might make for an interesting competition (or at least subjects that I’d like to try); here are several of them:

Patterns
Balance
Humor
Creativity
Danger
Serenity
Transportation
Invitation
Macro
Food
Travel
Play
Light

Hmmm Something about the winning photo does not look exactly “Kid Safe” :-)

And that there is my suggestion for a photo contest theme, “Kid Safe”..

The winner is OK. I wouldn’t have picked it.

Love both of these. What are the broken compositional rules in the runner-up?

Dave Says:

The winning photo is a work of genius. It is a Charles Addams drawing come to life.

The rule of thirds for a start

I’m so tempted to post an image for the next competition. But in a few days my first DSLR (D200) will arrive, and it would be a shame to jump the gun with a camera en route.

Question: I shot a picture that nails the theme on the head, but I shot it on Sunday, before the theme was announced. I know that you have given photos runner-up before because they weren’t shot during the two week period, so will my picture not be looked at as fondly as others?

Scott Says:

21 July 2008 at 10:02 pm.

@Andrew like we’ve said dozens of times - the point of the contest is to get people out shooting. We always (as we’ve said dozens of times) give preference to those images shot during that time frame. We however allow photos taken at any time in the contest. So I think you’re hoping that I’ll change that policy in this case but I cannot. It’s not about winning, it’s about shooting. If your image ties with an image shot during the time frame we set up for the contest - the one shot during the time frame wins.

If you have a killer shot - submit it - but still go out there and shoot blue.

Roger Says:

@Dave

A work of genius? That’s a bit of a stretch.

Scott Says:

21 July 2008 at 10:25 pm.

@Roger I guess you better call me a stretcher too since I happen to agree with Dave. This is an amazing photo. And usually, I get about 100 hate mails from people (usually those who do not win) challenging my pick. Didn’t happen this week which is more evidence of how great this image is. Why not just enjoy it?

@Scott I wasn’t thinking that you would change your guidelines, I was just wondering what the guidelines were.

Unbelievable photo! The proof that one doesn’t need to stick to the theme literally. Great use of imagination! Was this photo taken on purpose for the contest?

Pentaxfan Says:

The photos selected are very good photos, and they were selected for a reason from a large pool of photos which I think many are very good.
How about we let the judges judge and select the winners and we all pat the back of the person that submitted the photo that was selected. Next week it just might be you getting the rewards, careful what you say! We need to not take anything away from the photographer that shot the photo. If you want to critique the photos to extreme go into the critique area of TWIP/Flickr. Most important, Have fun and don’t take the fire or drive away from fellow photographers! PF.
