TWIP’s Photo Assignment Competition 11 - Fireworks

Photo Assignment
Our last photo assignment was Strength and we had hundres of qualified submissions. But there can be only one winner. And the winner is …. As high as an elephant’s eye.
This photo has a unique angle and perspective that implies strength. It’s also a neat use of depth-of-field and texture. If the winner sends us an e-mail, we’ll get busy sending them their prizes.
The runner up was Extra Strength Coffee. We liked this image because of the unique and amusing take on the theme…we reward insight and humor as well as technical achievement. Thanks to everyone who entered.
This week’s assignment - should you decide to accept it - is to photograph Fireworks. That’s it - no other guidelines - (other than keep it clean - remember our TWIP Flickr Group rules - kid-safe photos only please.)
You can post ONE image to the new Flickr - the TWIP CONTEST POOL and we’ll do the rest. You can also just use the old tag system if you prefer and tag the image with the current theme.
We’ll pick one or two of the images we really like to talk about and feature on the blog - and if we really like something, we’ll send a free book, (or two or three or whatever we have tossed into the prize pool that week) to the winner.
So have at it. You have until July 16 at 5:00 PM - PST to post your images. You can still post images with this theme after the deadline - but we won’t consider them for our TWIP Photo Assignment Competition.
If you’d like to chip in, please suggest some future themes you’d like us to explore in the comment section below. Have fun.

Just before all the comments come in (and I save Scott somework)…
YES this might be seen as a US-centric theme, being the 4th of July.
YES there is probably no fireworks happening around you anytime.
YES it is illegal to set of fireworks without a license (I use to hold an individual license here in Australia)
BUT it is all how you interpret the word.
One of last weeks ‘STRENGTH’ winners was three spoons of coffee… did anyone see that coming?
As always, I look forward to the challenge.
Thanks again for your work guys.

Wonderful shots! The winning shot is extraordinary. Love the detail, textures…everything. Well done.
Runner up shot is clever and fun. Congrats to both.

@John Worthington THANK YOU! And yes as always - the theme can be incorporated any way you like. For instance - I have some old girlfriends who often exposed me to a different kind of fireworks when I forgot to take out the trash!

I’ll have to get creative for this one … camping near Yosemite right now and I don’t think that I’ll see any fireworks today due to all the wild-fires in the area (they won’t even let us have fires at our campsite!). That’s okay … I love a good challenge.

I vote for “Speed” as a theme. Photography offers so many ways to capture speed, from panning to long exposures, to just capturing interesting interpretations of the theme.
Thanks for all the great content, TWiPpers!

I live in Calgary, and since there are fireworks every night for the next week because of the Stampede, this is a perfect time for this theme. I should be able to get lots of practice.

I was going to suggest “Speed” as a theme, but I see that Mr. Darlow has beaten me to it! In that case, I will suggest:
“Absence”
I think that’s abstract enough to bring out some really creative shots. Keep up the great work on my favorite podcast!

Oh, and are we allowed to photoshop our pictures? Such as creating HDRs or saturating more, etc.?

I think it might be interesting to see what people can come up with with the subject: Light Graffiti. Its really becoming a big thing online, and i would love to see what the creative folks who enjoy this website can come up with. cheers
