Twip Poll Results - Are You a Professional or an Amateur?

The results of the last poll are in. Clearly, most of you consider yourselves amateur photographers. I was actually surprised that almost one in five make some money with their images and find that to be encouraging.

The next poll is simple “Have you paid to attend a photo workshop?”

You’ll have a week to answer. The poll is designed to allow only one vote per computer.

I am going to a photo workshop in August in Nashville. It may be expensive for me ($600) but the experience and networking and learning from other like minded people can be invaluable in the future.

I pay hundreds of dollars a year to attend conferences in my chosen discipline. I might consider a Photography workshop if the arrangements were convenient.

Photo workshops aren’t my thing. I’d rather find my own path through the photography wilderness.

The problem I have is that there are no workshops in the area that I live. If there was I would definitely consider it as I am sure that the experience gained would be invaluable.

Regarding the poll just ended, I prefer to think of myself as a hobbyist or enthusiast. I often find that “amateur” is used in a slightly disparaging way… (Mind you, I guess some people may have the same feelings about the two terms I’ve mentioned!)

(I used to be involved in several local amateur dramatics groups. Although we were categorised as amateurs, each group aspired to the highest of standards and it wasn’t uncommon for audience members to say that the shows we produced were of a higher standard than shows they had seen which were performed by “professionals”.)

I once sold a photo I took of guitarist Steve Morse for beer money while at college. Does that make me a “pro”? ;-)

How to classify an amateur? As a microscopist I need to take thousands of photographs as records of specimens for interpretation, research and storage. Yet, I am not earning as a photographer.
