DISCUSSION

Scott and Alex talk about plans for the future of TWiP and the impetus behind creating the show. While audio will be the most frequent format, future episodes will likely integrate video and screencasting to help illustrate techniques and concepts in photography.

Simon talks about the “epiphany moment” that comes as one plunges into photography. Going digital has completely reinvigorated his approach to photography by providing immediate feedback and letting him experiment more freely without burning through consumables like film and paper.

Scott, Alex and Steve discuss their backgrounds in Photography.

Alex: Received is first K1000 at age ten from his uncle, an accomplished photographer. Alex was the darkroom head by high school and moved into digital imagery beginning with Photoshop 1.0 and beyond. Professionally, he focused on photography to aid in his texture mapping as a 3D artist at ILM while working on Star Wars Episode 1. His supervisor was John Knoll, one of the original creators of Photoshop. :)

Steve: Started photography at eleven years old taking shots of planes and sunsets from the roof of his apartment building. He became a professional photojournalist and spent years as a newspaper photographer. Feeling constrained by the schedule of newspaper photography, he moved on to teach and pursue documentary projects.

Scott: As a child, Scott dreamed of being a radio personality. This quickly went by the wayside - at least for the time being - when his half sister’s husband gave him a camera and asked him to shoot the Indianapolis 500 for their newspaper. As luck would have it, he was in the right place at the right time to end up with a photo that appeared on 2000 newspaper front pages across the nation. A career was born that included professional sports photography, wedding photography, and ten years as a wildlife photographer. He stayed involved in radio throughout it all, though, and is now bringing those skills together in the form of this and other podcasts.

Steve discusses the double-edged sword of turning a passion for photography into one’s livelihood. While it’s always wonderful to make a living doing something you love, it can also have you slogging through unavoidable assignments that sap a bit of the life out of the process. In a nutshell, think long and hard before turning your passion into a career and possibly risking the joy you derive from it.

Alex and Steve, both frequent travelers to Africa, recount stories of shooting on the continent. They discuss the inherent cultural risks and rewards that often accompany the photographic process in an environment so different from that of the west.

Alex, proud father of his recently born third child, is experiencing the joys of having digital photography so accessible this time around. Scott wholeheartedly confirms that Malakhi John Alexander Lindsay is, in fact, “dangerously cute”. :)

Derrick Story, discussing Steve’s work in Africa pays the high compliment (paraphrased): “Steve is the kind of photographer that has the ability to go into a situation and become invisible.”

EPISODE TIPS

Scott: Be sure when you take a photograph that you tell a story. Shooting inspiring subjects brings out the best of your creative eye.

Steve: Find a subject that you are passionate about and explore it in depth. The results can lead to unexpected and wonderful things. See an image through and avoid the regret that often comes from walking away too soon.

Alex: As simple and obvious as it may sound, take LOTS of photos of your subjects. Try to make every shot your “money shot”, but exploit the key benefit of digital photography: you are longer constrained by expensive, limited consumables. Who cares if you keep four out of 150 attempts? You might never have gotten those four without the benefit of shooting so freely.

NEWS

The 2008 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Tradeshow arrives in a couple of weeks. HINT: Don’t go buying a camera in the weeks immediately preceding the show unless you’re a big fan of instant obsolescence and buyer’s remorse.

Canon has come up with a fix for a focusing flaw in the high end EOS-1D Mark III. Repairs are now possible for owners of this body. Additional news since the recording of this podcast (dated Feb 3rd) can also be found here.

Well, I just got finished listening to your first podcast. I enjoyed it. I didn’t realize Alex and Scott’s background in Photography! Made me quite jealous. But I think I actually went away from the podcast learning something. I just really have to force myself to take more photos. I too have a 12 week old baby to shoot… but I think my baby boy Josiah (also a Biblical name) is cuter!

Wow great show, I am so excited about this podcast. Looking forward to all the content you guys will have to offer.

I listen to several other Photography podcasts as well. Each one offers their own take on photography. This one is no exception. Always lots to learn in this field.

I liked hearing from podcasters, that I already listen to, talk about their other talents that we don’t hear much about on the other podcasts.

Thanks for creating yet another great podcast. Good Luck and have fun!

Great first show. I look forward to all of the content that is in the future, especially anything video. I think that maybe a Flickr group of some sort would be in order, so that listeners can share their photos and maybe have weekly assignments and so on. Just a thought.

[...] The first ever TWIP podcast was recorded on the main stage, live at Macworld 08. Alex and I decided to just do it and I grabbed Steve off the show floor to help. He was giving a talk with me 20 minutes earlier in the camera pavilion and I had to explain what a podcast was to him [...]
