TWIP’s Photo Assignment Competition #3 - Signs

Last week’s photo assignment was ROCK - Again we received about 100 entries to the competition. That’s a high level of participation and we really appreciate it.

There were several powerful images to select from. As runner up, we went for howe2skate72’s Fairgreen “don’t look back.” Remember - the theme is ROCK and you can do with that what you will. In this case, the photographer selected rock and roll rock and we thought this was clever. Well done. Sometimes the way you interpret a photo assignment is the most important factor in creating the image.

We picked “Fog Rock” by CarrotKid as the winner. It has an interesting mood and the monochromatic feel causes the image to have impact. We also like the composition.

If CarrottKid contacts us with his shipping address - he’ll win a free copy of my book “88 Secrets to Selling and Publishing Your Photography.”

This week’s assignment - should you decide to accept it - is to photograph SIGNS. That’s it - no other guidelines - (other than keep it clean - remember our TWIP Flickr Group rules - kid-safe photos only please.)

You can post ONE image to the group that shows your best results - tag the image with TWIP SIGNS and we’ll do the rest.

PLEASE NOTE! Several people posted MORE than one image to the pool for the contest. You’re free to do that, but we won’t consider those entrants valid.

We’ll pick one or two of the images we really like to talk about and feature on the blog - and if we really like something, we’ll send a free copy of of Steve Simon’s photo essay “The Republicans” to the best image-maker.

So have at it. You have until March 12th at 5:00 PM - PST to post your images. You can still post images with a theme of SIGNS after that - but we won’t consider them for our TWIP Photo Assignment Competition.

If you’d like to chip in, please suggest some future themes you’d like us to explore in the comment section below. Have fun.

Scott,
Please make it clear weather or not images eligible for the contest need to be submitted to the “This Week In Photography (Pool)”. I did have four images that happened to have tags twip and rock, but only had submitted one image to the “TWiP (Pool)” .
The reason I even bring this up is the “Fairgreen don’t look back” wasn’t even part of the twip pool and had only used tags. Was it even eligible?
Love the podcast and just want this to be crystal clear.
Thanks,
Ernie
PS The website link is to the image I submitted to the contest/pool.

The rules are simple - post an image to Flickr - tag it with the words TWIP ROCK. No where did we mention posting to the pool.

Hello All!

Just want to say your Blog/podcast/flicker Groups are great! The Assignments are an awesome way to get me out there and take photos when I am in a slump of not knowing what to photograph. I am still trying to find my “speciality” so maybe these exercises will help. I have joined the Flickr critique group as well so hopefully I will get some constructive advice as I am self taught. As far as future subjects maybe Doors or Textures.

Thanks!

Hey Scott, One thing I’ve been slightly confused about. When you say “tag it with the words TWIP ROCK” do you actually mean TWIP and ROCK or TWIPROCK or TWIP_ROCK? I’ve seen all three used in earlier assignments.
Thanks.

In your post, you ask for future ideas to explose. Here are some thoughts…

A few years back, I organized a photo scavenger hunt for our software R&D lab as a team building exercise. We gave each small team a digital camera, a four hour shooting window, and told them to find, photograph, and submit their best image for each of the following: Light, Change, Hope, UFO (could be Unidentified Flying Object, Unclean Filthy Oven, Unexpected Friday Overture, … whatever TLA expansion they could think of); teams were to be “creative” in their interpretation of the assignment. We also included two “inverted” caption contests - we supplied the captions, the teams were challenged to take photos for which the caption would be appropriate/funny/compelling/etc. It was a lot of fun for all involved and very interesting to see the creative spin folks put on each of the suggested categories.

Br,

Tom

I just got a Nikon D40x in December. I been shooting in HQ Jpegs but I want to start using RAW. How should I go about managing the RAW and Jpegs of the same image? Is this were something like Apature comes in?

In your this podcast you talked about how great RAW is but as a noob I’m nerous about making the switch. I have heard that special software is required to work with Nikon RAW files.

My submission doesn’t show up when I search all of Flickr for some reason. It’s tagged with TWIP SIGNS and all of my photos are public. It does show up when I search the pool, though. Weird and troubling.

I have uploaded a TWIP SIGNS photo to my Flickr account and tagged it “TWIP SIGNS” but when I do a search for “TWIP SIGNS” I don’t see my photo. Does anyone know why I can see all of the other photos tagged “TWIP SIGNS” but don’t see mine in the search results?
